This time of year, and the new year in general, is exceptionally busy for restaurant owners and operators. Not only are you handling a higher volume of customers because of holiday parties, but you’re also focused on laying the groundwork for success in the coming year.
And while this planning looks different for each restaurant, there are foundational elements that everyone should include, especially if you want to make 2020 your best year yet.
From our perspective, those essentials would cover all areas of HR – essentially, the “full life cycle” of the employee. Having a well-designed support system to help with hiring, firing, and everything in-between, is invaluable.
Here are 5 focuses that will help improve your restaurant.
1. Hiring and Retention
We all know that finding – and keeping – the “right” people for your team is imperative. But it’s the behind-the-scenes planning that can make or break you.
In order to find and hire and retain the best people, you have to clearly define exactly who you are. Identifying – and living out – the company’s vision, purpose, and values will practically lead the right people directly to you. This system will pay for itself many times over if you take the time to properly plan and establish it.
It’s tough to keep up with ever-changing laws, regulations, and guidelines. And if you’re caught off-guard, non-compliance could mean severe penalties, fines, and a whole heap of bad PR.
So establish a system ASAP that helps to maintain compliance of the following:
- FMLA, USERRA, and leaves of absences
- OSHA and workplace safety
- Employee files
- And the list goes on….and on….and on!
The regulations are one of the most overwhelming aspects that our clients face. And understandably so. They are extremely difficult to track without a viable system in place.
