Well, if you’ve read the title already, my secret is now out to the world.
I am a huge Pitbull fan. Nope, not the animal. The singer, rapper, entertainer extraordinaire Pitbull. AKA Mr. 305 and Mr. Worldwide.
Queue the funny looks, snickers, and jokes. Go ahead, get them out of your system. Believe me, I’ve heard them all and can crack a few solid ones at my own expense too. I realize I’m not what most would consider the “typical” Pitbull fan, so when people hear about my fangirling and attendance at his shows, they can’t help but laugh and shake their heads in disbelief.
So why all the Pitbull love? The answers may surprise you.
Well, this one may not surprise you if you listen to the radio at all. Pitbull has mastered the art of the party anthem His music is just so FUN and free! And he’s one of those entertainers who draws you in too, by keeping things lighthearted, upbeat, and happy. The smile on his face is contagious and he absolutely knows how to put on one heck of a show!
What better way to escape the stress of our daily lives than to kick back, let loose, and just have some no holds barred harmless fun?!? Pitbull and his musical style have got your back on this one.
His Passion for Helping Children
Pitbull gets that there’s more to life than just his profession and making music and money, and he strives to pay if forward in his own unique way. It’s a lesson that all of us business owners should take to heart.
In 2013, he opened a public charter school in Miami called the Sports Leadership and Management Academy (SLAM), earning himself yet another nickname, “Mr. Education.” The school’s mission is “to provide an innovative and in-depth secondary educational program that produces college-bound students through emphasis on sports-related majors and post-secondary preparation.”
Essentially, he’s reaching out to and connecting with kids through sports, and helping today’s youth find viable sports-related career paths in the meantime. The program seems to be taking off too. In late 2016, Pitbull opened a second location in Henderson, Nevada.
For those who don’t know Pitbull’s background (his name is actually Armando Christian Perez, by the way), let me quickly recap. A first generation Cuban-American, he was born and raised in Miami. Growing up in drug-riddled neighborhoods, and reportedly, with a drug dealing father as well, Pitbull could have easily fallen into the same trap.
But instead of dwelling on the hand that life dealt though, he focused on what he could control, using the resources available to him and putting his efforts into sports and music. He learned English by watching Sesame Street and discipline through participation in martial arts and basketball. Pitbull’s persistence paid off when he eventually caught a break in 2001 and signed his first record deal.
The takeaway? To get to where you want to go, whether in life or business, persistence and resourcefulness are key. In our instant gratification world, the power of persistence remains.
His Business and Branding Acumen
Pitbull is the ultimate success story — someone who started with nothing, no connections, no advantages and has molded that into an incredible, flourishing empire. And that extends beyond just the music biz. In addition to the more than 70 million singles sold worldwide, sold out arenas, and collaborations with the industry’s top talent, Pitbull has managed to launch successful ventures in other industries also, perhaps at least in part, because he had the foresight to align with the right people and listen to their advice. In Pitbull’s case, he hired Daymond John, founder of the clothing line FUBU and investor on Shark Tank, as his brand manager.
Thanks to tightly controlling his image and establishing a strong brand that resonates with and unites his target audience, Pitbull’s reach has been far and wide. He has dabbled in fragrance development, scored a Sirius XM radio channel, and earned product endorsements with Voli Vodka, Bud Light, Kodak, and Dr. Pepper to name a few.
Remember that charismatic and endearing smile I mentioned earlier? Even though Pitbull works hard and dang near nonstop it seems, he stays positive and forward-focused. By all accounts, he seems relentless about defining success and happiness on his own terms — two traits I admire immensely both from a personal and professional standpoint.
